History of Slapton Sands.
The town of Slapton was founded over 700 years ago by sir Guy de brian and is home to a population of 473. It is recorded in the Doomsday book as Sladone.
During pre WW2 life slapton was just a coastal town that had many farming families and thriving family businesses, it was also home to many Evacuee's for a short period of time before the villagers in a 25 square mile radius of Slapton had to leave. They were told that the beach of Slapton would be used as a practice site for the invasion of France.

Many people were very outraged on leaving their homes, many had been living there their whole life and protested to this departure they had to make, some made strikes but eventually they all left.
For many months the training in the area went well, the american's were training efficiently and were actually on a training course in the early hours of April 28th- the fatal day when the German U boats came and shot at the officers. The tragic shots were thought to be part of the practice. Over a hundred people died in the event.
